The Complete Skin Rejuvenation Guide: When to Use RF Microneedling, CO2, Aerolase, Chemical Peels, or PRF
The Complete Skin Rejuvenation Guide: RF Microneedling, CO2, Aerolase, Chemical Peels & More | Refine by Tulsi Chicago

You know you want better skin. But the number of options is overwhelming: RF microneedling, CO2 laser, Aerolase, chemical peels, microneedling, PRF, Medical Grade Facial — each claiming to be the answer. The reality is none of them is the answer on its own. The right treatment depends entirely on what your skin actually needs.

At Refine by Tulsi, we don’t pick treatments by popularity. We match them to your specific concern, skin type, tolerance for downtime, and long-term goals. This guide is the framework we use with our patients — a clear, honest breakdown of what each treatment does best and when to choose it.

Understanding the Skin Rejuvenation Spectrum

Every skin rejuvenation treatment falls somewhere on a spectrum from gentle (no downtime, gradual results) to aggressive (significant downtime, dramatic results). Neither end is inherently better — the right spot on the spectrum depends on your concern and your life.

A Closer Look at Each Treatment

Aerolase Neo Elite: The No-Downtime Workhorse

Aerolase is our most-used device for a reason: it treats the widest range of concerns with zero downtime, zero numbing, and safety across all skin tones. Its 650-microsecond Nd:YAG pulse targets pigment, hemoglobin, and collagen without the thermal spread that makes other lasers risky for darker skin or rosacea-prone skin.

Choose Aerolase when: redness, rosacea, active acne, mild pigmentation, broken capillaries, overall tone improvement, or anytime you need results without taking a single day off. Read our full comparison: Aerolase vs IPL vs BBL.

Chemical Peels: The Versatile Resurfacer

Chemical peels remain one of the most effective and affordable treatments in aesthetics. We use a range of depths — from gentle glycolic and lactic peels (no visible peeling) to medium-depth TCA peels (3–7 days of flaking) — depending on your concern. Peels excel at sun damage, pigmentation, rough texture, and dullness.

Choose peels when: sun damage, hyperpigmentation, rough texture, dull/ashy skin, acne congestion, or as a maintenance treatment between more intensive sessions. Peels also pair beautifully with Aerolase and Medical Grade Facial in the same visit.

Microneedling + PRF: The Regenerative Approach

Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering your body’s wound-healing response and stimulating new collagen. When we add Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) — your own concentrated growth factors — the collagen response is amplified significantly.

Choose microneedling + PRF when: general skin quality improvement, mild acne scarring, fine lines, pore reduction, crepey skin, or whenever you want a natural, regenerative approach. It’s also our preferred maintenance treatment between Sylfirm X or CO2 sessions. For hair thinning, we offer PRP hair restoration using the same principles.

Sylfirm X RF Microneedling: The Precision Powerhouse

Sylfirm X is the most versatile single device in our practice. Its dual-wave technology lets us switch between continuous wave (collagen remodeling, tightening) and pulsed wave (pigmentation, melasma, vascular conditions) — making it the only RF microneedling device that can safely treat conditions like melasma that other devices worsen.

Choose Sylfirm X when: skin tightening, melasma, acne scarring, pore reduction, fine lines, early jowling, or whenever you need deeper remodeling than standard microneedling provides. Read our full comparison: Sylfirm X vs Morpheus8 vs Potenza.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing: The Heavy Hitter

CO2 laser resurfacing with our Deka SmartXide Pro is the most powerful skin rejuvenation treatment we offer. Fractional ablative technology removes the outer skin layer and delivers intense heat to the dermis, triggering dramatic collagen remodeling. Results are transformative — but so is the downtime (5–10 days of redness, swelling, and peeling).

Choose CO2 when: deep wrinkles, severe acne scarring, significant sun damage, advanced textural damage, or whenever you’re ready for maximum results and can commit to the recovery period. We often combine CO2 with Sylfirm X for synergistic collagen remodeling at multiple depths.

Medical Grade Facial: The Glow Maintenance

Medical Grade Facial isn’t trying to compete with lasers or RF — it serves a different purpose entirely. It deeply cleanses, extracts congestion, and infuses hydrating serums in one 30-minute session. No downtime, instant glow. It’s the treatment you do before a wedding, after a flight, or monthly as maintenance between more intensive treatments.

Choose Medical Grade Facial when: event prep, dullness, congested pores, dehydration, or as monthly maintenance. Pairs with Aerolase and dermaplaning for the ultimate no-downtime glow session.

The Power of Combination: How We Actually Build Treatment Plans

Here’s what we tell patients at their consultation: no single treatment does everything. The best results come from strategic combinations that target different concerns at different depths, spaced appropriately for your skin to recover and rebuild.

Common treatment plans at Refine by Tulsi:

The Principle We Live By

Start with the least aggressive treatment that can reasonably address your concern. Escalate only if needed. Most patients get excellent results from the moderate end of the spectrum — Sylfirm X, microneedling with PRF, and Aerolase — without ever needing CO2. We’d rather you spend less on the right treatment than more on an unnecessarily aggressive one.

Real Patient Experiences

I came in wanting CO2 for my sun damage because I thought that’s what I needed. Dr. Kotecha looked at my skin and said Aerolase would get me 80% of the way there with zero downtime — and we could reassess after. Four Aerolase sessions later, I’m thrilled with the results and never needed CO2. She saved me a week of recovery and probably $1,000.

— Linda, 53

I’d been doing basic facials for years with minimal improvement to my acne scars. When I switched to Refine by Tulsi, Dr. Kotecha put me on a plan: Sylfirm X with PRF for three sessions, then reassess. After the third session, my scars were visibly flatter and my texture was smoother than it had been in a decade. She said if I wanted to take it further we could do CO2, but honestly I’m already happy. Having a plan that builds on itself instead of random treatments made all the difference.

— Daniel, 31

I have melasma and rosacea — the combination from hell. Everyone told me to avoid lasers. Dr. Kotecha used Sylfirm X pulsed wave for the melasma and Aerolase for the rosacea redness, alternating treatments every few weeks. Six months in, both conditions are better than they’ve been in five years. No one else had a plan for both simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which treatment I need without a consultation?

You don’t — and that’s the honest answer. This guide gives you the framework, but skin concerns are nuanced. What looks like pigmentation might be melasma (different treatment). What looks like scarring might be active inflammation that needs to be controlled first. The consultation exists to identify the root cause and match the right treatment to your specific skin.

Can I do multiple treatments in one visit?

Often, yes. Aerolase can be combined same-day with peels, Medical Grade Facial, or dermaplaning. Microneedling can be combined with PRF. More aggressive treatments like CO2 or Sylfirm X are typically done as standalone sessions.

What’s the most cost-effective starting point?

For most patients, a series of Aerolase treatments (starting at $250/session) or chemical peels (starting at $150) provides excellent results at the lowest cost with zero downtime. If you need tightening or scar improvement, microneedling with PRF (starting at $350) offers strong value. We never recommend spending more than necessary.

How do I maintain results after a treatment series?

Maintenance is where the real value lives. After an initial treatment series, we typically recommend quarterly Aerolase or microneedling sessions, monthly Medical Grade Facials, daily medical-grade skincare, and religious SPF use. Combining external treatments with internal support — GHK-Cu peptide therapy, IV nutrient therapy — extends and amplifies results.

I have dark skin — what’s safe for me?

Aerolase (safe for all Fitzpatrick types), Sylfirm X (pulsed wave mode specifically designed for darker skin), microneedling with PRF (mechanical, no thermal risk), and carefully selected chemical peels. CO2 laser requires extra caution and is not appropriate for all darker skin tones. We always assess your Fitzpatrick type before recommending treatment.

The Bottom Line

Skin rejuvenation isn’t about finding the one magic treatment. It’s about building a strategy that matches the right tool to the right concern, at the right intensity, for the right patient.

  • For redness, rosacea, acne, and zero-downtime maintenance → Aerolase
  • For tightening, melasma, scarring, and deep remodeling → Sylfirm X
  • For natural, regenerative skin quality improvement → Microneedling + PRF
  • For sun damage, pigmentation, and texture → Chemical Peels
  • For maximum resurfacing and dramatic transformation → CO2 Laser
  • For event-ready glow and monthly maintenance → Medical Grade Facial
