Fillers are injectable substances that are used to enhance facial features, restore volume and contour specific areas of the face.

What are Dermal Fillers?

With the natural aging process, our facial skin stretches, and we lose subcutaneous fat resulting in loss of facial volume. Dermal fillers restore lost volume, smooth lines, soften creases and enhance facial contours, resulting in fullness in the face. The most common areas treated are the lips, jaw line and cheeks.

Different Kinds of Facial Fillers

There are multiple FDA-approved facial filler products which are categorized by the substance they are made from.

Hyaluronic acid (Juvederem®, Restylane®, Revanesse®, Beloterro®)
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps retain moisture and add volume. As we age, our skin’s hyaluronic acid levels decrease, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of volume. Dermal fillers are carefully formulated to replenish hyaluronic acid and restore a more youthful appearance.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®)
Radiesse is a dermal filler that utilizes Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a water-based gel carrier. It works through a combination of immediate volume restoration and stimulation of the body’s collagen production. Over time, as the gel component is absorbed and metabolized by the body, the newly formed collagen remains in the area, providing long-lasting structural support and volume. Eventually, the CaHA microspheres are metabolized by the body’s natural processes, leaving behind only the natural collagen.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (Scultpra®)
Sculptra works primarily by stimulating the body’s own collagen production resulting in a gradual improvement in skin thickness and reduction in the appearance of facial wrinkles and folds over time. The effects of Sculptra are not immediate, and a series of treatment sessions are typically needed. Patients usually observe noticeable results in the improvement of folds and wrinkles within several weeks after the treatment sessions.

What Type of Dermal Filler do you Need?

At your consultation, you will discuss your goals and concerns with your provider, who will then determine the best type and volume of filler to achieve the results you are looking for.

Potential Dermal Filler Complications

Severe complications are uncommon and will be discussed prior to your consent. The risks vary depending on the type of filler used and include allergy (itch, rash, redness), bleeding/bruising, infection, lumps/swelling/able to palpate the filler under the skin.

In very rare cases, the filler may be injected into blood vessels resulting in skin necrosis or wounds. If the flow to the eye is blocked, you may end up with blindness.
